Personalized Diabetes Management

Diabetes management specialists at CHI St. Alexius Health take a multidisciplinary approach to address possible complications caused by diabetes. Diabetes causes unique and chronic challenges. Your medical team will work with you to suggest lifestyle changes and a personalized health management program.

Specialists For Your Lifestyle

In treating this chronic disease as recommended by your primary physician, patients may be encouraged to consult with an endocrinologist (physician who specializes in glands and the hormones they produce), an eye doctor, kidney specialist, wound care expert, nutritionist, diabetes educator, and other professionals.

The pancreas is a gland that produces insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar. When the pancreas creates too little insulin, your body is resistance to insulin, or both, you may develop diabetes.

There are two main types of diabetes:

Type 1 develops when the pancreas produces little or no insulin.

Type 2 usually occurs in adulthood, but is now being diagnosed in teens and young adults because of increased obesity.

Gestational diabetes sometimes develops during pregnancy in non-diabetic women.

Our hospitals' Emergency Departments attend to all emergencies including heart attacks and strokes. Upon each patient's arrival, a triage process (to assess the degree of urgency) determines the order in which all patients are seen and the most efficient care plan.

North Dakota Health Insurance Regulation Regarding Air Ambulance Services:

Intensive Care Units at CHI St. Alexius Health provide care to critically ill patients who need constant observation. Our ICUs are staffed by hospitalists or intensivists - physicians trained specifically in the care of critically ill patients, who spend the majority of their time in the intensive care unit.

Visiting hours and protocols will vary by location. Please check with nursing staff at your location for more detailed information if your loved one is being cared for in the intensive care unit.

Respiratory Therapy
The ICU Respiratory Therapy (RT) Core Team is a specialized group who has received additional training specific to ICU. All ICU Respiratory Therapists are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified.

ICU RT aspects include mechanical ventilation management, Diagnostic testing (drawing and reporting blood gas values), hemodynamic monitoring, airway management and all general treatments and procedures. The ICU RT is a member of the multidisciplinary critical care Rapid Response Team that responds to all emergent calls within the medical center. The ICU RT also assists with transporting critical ill patients for treatment/procedures that cannot be done at bedside.

Kidney Dialysis at CHI St. Alexius Health provides chronic in-center hemodialysis for adolescent and adult patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). CHI St. Alexius Health dialysis units offer a team approach to caring for our patients.

Early and Accurate Diagnosis

3D Mammography and Digital mammography at CHI St. Alexius Health can help detect breast cancer earlier using low dose x-rays to produce diagnostic images of breast tissue. With one in eight women being diagnosed with breast cancer sometime in her life, mammograms give every woman her best chance for an early and accurate diagnosis.

CHI St. Alexius is dedicated to bringing 3D mammography* to more communities than ever before. We offer a new standard of detecting breast cancer for women in Bismarck, Mandan, Minot, and Williston. 3D breast tomosynthesis - known as 3D mammography - is leading the way in the earliest detection of breast cancer. It helps doctors see breast tissue in greater depth and clarity.

We are proud to offer you the latest in breast imaging technology: wide-angle breast tomosynthesis. A wide-angle 3D mammogram offers a better view of breast tissue than a standard 3D mammogram. Our 50-degree angle, the industry's highest depth resolution, captures more detail for the highest quality 3D images. This increases diagnostic confidence enabling earlier detection.

Early Detection is Key

  1. Schedule a screening mammogram every year. The American Cancer Society recommends women age 40 and older have an annual screening mammogram.
  2. Schedule an annual clinical breast examination. The best way to detect breast cancer early is to combine annual mammograms with a yearly clinical breast examination by an experienced healthcare provider.
  3. Perform breast self-examinations on a monthly basis. Regular self-exams permit women to detect early changes and small lumps in the breast. If you discover any of these changes, notify your healthcare provider immediately.

Improving Health With The Right Diet

Nutrition Services at CHI St. Alexius Health plays an important role in improving and promoting good health to inpatients and outpatients in the communities we serve. Providing fresh, tasty, and healthy options for patients and visitors is a priority to us.

Many of our hospitals have registered dietitians available to help with healthcare concerns relating to nutrition.

Outpatient nutrition consulting is available for individuals looking to improve their diet and lifetime eating habits, or looking to specifically manage a disease such as diabetes. A physician's referral is needed if an individual seeks the consult to be covered by insurance.

Caring For Your Baby

Prenatal care is important for expecting mothers, and it is one of the best things you can do for your baby during your pregnancy.

Getting early and regular prenatal care can help prevent complications and inform women about important steps they can take to protect their infant and ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Prenatal care is available from a number of our women's health and family practice physicians, physician assistants, and family nurse practitioners.

Education is available to expecting mothers in the months and weeks before a baby arrives including breastfeeding classes, childbirth/Lamaze classes, and tours of the obstetrics department.
